India issued a travel advisory Tuesday asking its nationals in Nepal to exercise caution following violent protests that killed 19 people and injured hundreds across the Himalayan nation. The unrest has prompted authorities to impose indefinite curfews in major cities, including Kathmandu.
India stance on Nepal Protest Row
“We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery for those who were injured,” India’s Foreign Ministry stated.
New Delhi emphasized its role as a “close friend and neighbour,” expressing hope that “all concerned will exercise restraint and address any issues through peaceful means and dialogue.”
The ministry specifically advised Indian nationals to “exercise caution and adhere to the steps and guidelines issued by the Nepali authorities.”
Escalating Security Measures in Nepal amid protest
Nepalese authorities imposed an indefinite curfew within Kathmandu’s Ring Road area after lifting an earlier restriction, according to the Himalayan Times. Kathmandu district administrator Chhabilal Rijal announced comprehensive restrictions.
“No protests, mass gatherings, meetings, or assemblies of people will be allowed during the curfew,” Rijal stated. Neighbouring Lalitpur district implemented curfew until midnight Tuesday.
Government’s Investigation Promise
Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed sadness over violence caused by “infiltration from different selfish centres.” He announced compensation for victims’ families and free medical treatment for the injured.
“An investigation panel will be set up to find out the causes, assess losses and suggest measures within 15 days to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future,” Oli said Monday night.
‘Gen Z’ Uprising in Nepal
Protest organizers describe the demonstrations as “Gen Z” movements, reflecting young people’s frustration with government inaction on corruption and economic opportunities. The unrest intensified after authorities blocked social media platforms, including Facebook, last week.
Officials justified the social media shutdown as targeting platforms failing to register with the government amid crackdowns on fake accounts, misinformation, and hate speech.
The protests have spread beyond Kathmandu to other cities, highlighting widespread youth discontent with Nepal’s current political and economic trajectory.
