India sends 30 tonnes of ‘medical aid’ to Palestine amid Gaza crisis

India has reinforced its humanitarian commitment to Palestine by dispatching a second major aid package, consisting of 30 tonnes of medical supplies including essential medicines and anti-cancer drugs, as the Middle East conflict intensifies.

India sends medical aid to Palestine

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced via social media platform X, “India’s support to the people of Palestine continues. Extending humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine sends 30 tonnes of medical supplies comprising essential life-saving and anti-cancer drugs to Palestine.”

This follows India’s initial humanitarian assistance delivered through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which included medical supplies and food items. The first shipment contained “a wide range of essential medicines and surgical supplies, dental products, general medical items and high-energy biscuits,” according to official statements.

PM Modi stands for ‘two-state’ solution for Isreal, Palestine

India’s diplomatic stance maintains support for a two-state solution while balancing regional relationships. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first world leaders to condemn Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel while expressing growing concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The aid comes at a critical time as UNRWA reports “inhumane” conditions in Gaza, with mounting waste management crises and sewage problems creating severe health risks for residents. “Families have no choice but to live next to this accumulated waste, exposing them to foul odours and the imminent risk of a health disaster,” UNRWA stated, calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Israel bans UNRWA’s activities

In a significant development affecting aid operations, Israel’s parliament has passed legislation banning UNRWA’s activities in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, a move the agency has termed “outrageous.” This legislative action coincides with a 24-day Israeli siege of northern Gaza that has reportedly claimed over 1,000 Palestinian lives and caused extensive destruction to civilian infrastructure.

India’s financial support to UNRWA remains steady, with a commitment of $2.5 million released in July 2024-25, demonstrating continued engagement in regional humanitarian efforts despite escalating tensions.
