Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb, who once served under President Donald Trump, has described Trump’s return to office in the 2024 election as the “biggest mistake” in America’s history. Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Cobb sharply criticized the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey while also issuing a strong rebuke of the former President.
During the program, Cobb argued that Trump orchestrated Comey’s indictment in order to protect himself. He explained that Trump considered Comey an obstacle because the former FBI Director had investigated alleged ties between Trump and Russia before the 2016 election. According to Cobb, the move was designed to manipulate public perception.
“The simple theme is rewriting history. Trump wants to rewrite history so the next generation may not know that he incited a violent insurrection, refused to peacefully transfer power after losing an election,” Cobb told host Margaret Brennan.
Cobb went further, warning the public against forgetting the lessons of the past. “America needs to learn from the mistakes that we’ve had. And one of the biggest mistakes that America ever had was re-electing President Trump,” he said.
James Comey, who led the FBI from 2013 to 2017, was formally indicted on September 26. The charges accuse him of lying to a Senate committee in 2020 about whether he had authorized the leak of classified information to the media. Comey has denied the allegations and maintains his innocence. “Let’s have a trial. My family and I have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump,” he said in a video posted on Substack.
Comey’s dismissal by Trump came in 2017, during the early stages of an investigation into possible connections between Russia and Trump’s campaign in the 2016 presidential race. That firing triggered political uproar and has remained a defining episode of Trump’s presidency.
