The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday called for a special session of Parliament to be convened in June, prior to the Monsoon session.
The demand for a special session has been gaining traction among opposition parties following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. The issue was also raised during an all-party briefing on Operation Sindoor.
Speaking at a press conference, TMC’s Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, Sagarika Ghose, emphasized the party’s continued support to the government in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack and during Operation Sindoor. She also noted the party’s backing of MP delegations dispatched to foreign nations.
“Having extended our full support to the government, we now endorse the call initially made by MP Kapil Sibal for a special session of Parliament,” Ghose stated. “We urge that this session be convened in June, ahead of the Monsoon session.”
TMC leaders stressed that opposition parties are united in their push for the session. “All parties opposing the BJP are coordinating efforts to press for a special Parliament session,” said Derek O’Brien, TMC’s Parliamentary Leader in the Rajya Sabha.
Operation Sindoor saw India conduct targeted strikes on nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7, as a direct response to the Pahalgam attack.
In retaliation, Pakistan launched attempted strikes on Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. India responded firmly to these provocations.
To reinforce its stance of zero tolerance against terrorism, India has since dispatched seven multi-party delegations to key global partners, including members of the UN Security Council. These delegations aim to present India’s position following both the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.
The delegations are led by BJP’s Baijayant Panda and Ravi Shankar Prasad, JDU’s Sanjay Kumar Jha, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, DMK’s Kanimozhi, and NCP-SP’s Supriya Sule. They are scheduled to visit 32 countries as well as the European Union headquarters in Brussels.
TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee is part of the delegation led by Sanjay Kumar Jha.
