Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Sushila Karki on Saturday as she assumed the office of Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, emphasizing India’s continued commitment to the peace and development of the Himalayan nation.

Karki, aged 73, made history on Friday evening by becoming Nepal’s first female Prime Minister. She is also the country’s first woman Chief Justice. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by President Ram Chandra Poudel, following extensive consultations with leaders of the Gen-Z protests, constitutional experts, and the Army chief.

In a message posted on X, PM Modi stated that he wished Right Honorable Mrs. Sushila Karki success in her new role and reaffirmed India’s dedication to supporting the prosperity and stability of the people of Nepal.

Earlier in the day, India welcomed the formation of the new interim government under Karki’s leadership. The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that it looks forward to strengthened ties with Kathmandu during this transitional period and expressed hope that the political change would promote peace and stability.

The MEA emphasized that as a close neighbor and democratic partner, India will continue collaborating with Nepal to ensure the well-being and development of both countries and their citizens.

Karki’s appointment followed the fall of the K.P. Sharma Oli-led government amid widespread Gen-Z protests. Her selection came after discussions between protest leaders and other stakeholders, particularly over the timing of dissolving the House of Representatives. Activists agreed on Karki’s name, even though other non-political figures had been considered.

However, Nepal’s Constitution does not permit anyone outside the House of Representatives to serve as Prime Minister. Karki’s appointment has been made under the principle of necessity. Article 76 states that only members of the House of Representatives are eligible to hold the office, which excludes her. Similarly, Article 132 clause 2 bars former Chief Justices or Supreme Court judges from holding government positions, except where the Constitution specifically allows.

Despite these constitutional restrictions, Karki has taken office, marking a historic milestone for Nepal and setting the stage for a new interim administration aimed at maintaining stability in the country.
