Maldives President States Second Batch of Indian Troops Will Leave Soon

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu stated on Tuesday that Indian troops “stationed on the second platform will be withdrawn within the current month.” The President also ensured that foreign troops within his country would be withdrawn by 10 May 2024.

According to Maldives’s PSM News, Muizzu highlighted the presence of Indian troops on three platforms in Maldives. He stated that the third aviation platform’s troops will be returned by 10 May 2024. He was quoted as saying that the withdrawal of foreign troops from Maldives is being pursued in accordance with diplomatic principles and norms. While making the announcement, Muizzu reiterated his government’s commitment to prioritizing the interests and visions of their country’s citizens. He also stated that the aim behind strengthening defense and security relations with friendly nations is to safeguard the independence and sovereignty of the Maldivian population.

Muizuu’s statement comes after the Maldives signed a defense agreement with China. He had reportedly informed the Chinese government is ready to extend training to the Maldieves army, and provide non-lethal weapony under a military grant.

Right after taking over as Maldives, President Muizuu asked India to withdraw its military personnel from the country by 10 May 2024. According to reports, he declared that no Indian military personnel, those in civilian attire wou, would be allowed to stay in the country after 10 M10
The first batch of military personnel, 25 troops, left the country around 13 March 2024. China’s spokesperson Wang Wenbin had then reacted to the first batch of Indian military personnel leaving the country. He stated, “China supports the Maldives in upholding its territorial sovereignty.”
